Wedgie Gardening Tool – Review and Giveaway – Ends 7/26

About Wedgie
I’m Cookie Wherry, the inventor of WEDGIE®. I live in a high-rise condo in Chicago with my husband, teenage daughter and two cats. I’m a Master Gardener and a docent at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. I grew up on a farm – plants are in my blood.

One doesn’t need a lot of space to take up gardening; one can use containers which come in all shapes and sizes. The one downside to container gardening has always been the spilled dirt that occurs when planting with a trowel. And quite simply, I invented WEDGIE® to end the clean-up time on my balcony. Instead of digging out dirt, I decided to create openings for plants a different way.
Wondering if other gardeners would be interested in WEDGIE®, I had a prototype made. With prototype in hand and wearing a t-shirt that read, ‘Ask me about WEDGIE™ World’s Best New Gardening Tool’, I attended the Chicago Flower & Garden Show in the spring of 2002. The enthusiastic response it received, with people asking how much it cost and where they could buy it, convinced me that there was indeed a market for WEDGIE®. It was time to tweak the design a bit, find a manufacturer, enlist the services of my daughter as a hand model for publicity photos….
The raw concept evolved into the bright-yellow, lightweight, durable tool you see today. The easy-to-hold knob handle was designed so that arthritis sufferers like me could maneuver the tool with just the palm of the hand if need be.
I won’t say it’s easy to get a new product into the marketplace. I had a lot of help from my husband and from friends. But I’ve not for a moment regretted doing it. There’s a great deal of personal satisfaction in creating something which others find so useful. I hope you will, too.” – Cookie Wherry

For my review, I received the Wedgie Gardening Tool. It is bright yellow that young children are immediately attracted to. They are able to grab onto the knob with ease, and they can participate in your gardening activities! The Wedgie is seven inches long and lightweight. It is made in America of durable, high-impact plastic. It is ergonomically-designed!
The Wedgie makes holes for small plants with a simple back and forth, side to side motion, displacing soil rather than digging it out. Container gardening is becoming more and more popular and container gardeners want to plant without spilling dirt all over their balcony, deck, patio, porch, or sidewalk. They also want to plant without later feeling the pain of a sore wrist or sore fingers. I have carpal tunnel, and just being on the computer makes the pain flare up. I can’t handle strenuous activity through the wrists, forearm and fingers. Thankfully, Wedgie allows for me to garden without sending shooting pains down my arm/wrist. People want gardening to be pleasurable, and so does Wedgie! Wedgie is a tool which makes it possible for folks suffering from arthritis and other disabilities to still be able to enjoy gardening. It is the easier on the wrist, makes less mess, works better in tight spaces planting tool for gardeners whether they’re planting one container or a hundred. Wedgie also works well in raised beds and flowerbeds with loose soil.
Underplanting without cutting off the roots of existing plants, making seed furrows, serving as a hose guard when watering are some of the other uses of Wedgie
  • Effective and user-friendly!
  • Easy to clean and easy on the body!
  • Eliminates digging out dirt so there’s no mess to clean up which saves both time and effort!
  • Each hole that Wedgie makes pushes soil over to fill in around the previous planting which further saves time.
  • The wrist stays in the level/neutral position as recommended by the Arthritis Foundation.
  • No extending and flexing as with a trowel, so there’s less wrist strain
  • The 2-inch knob handle is easy to grasp, but can be maneuvered with just the palm of the hand, if arthritis sufferers are unable to close fingers around a handle.

I learned that the wedgie helps eliminate wrist strain and also eliminates the need to dig out dirt and then refill the hole!

The first thing I learned was there is no store that I can go to and purchase it.

I also learned it is so easy to use with minimal mess. I love that all you have to really do is move it back and forth. This would be great for those that suffer pain in the hands, especially when grasping a handle to dig with a trowel.

-I learned: WEDGIE was invented by a Chicago gardener who said, “There has to be a better way!”
This is how it works: 1) Push WEDGIE® into loose soil, Rock it back & forth & side to side, Pull WEDGIE® out, and Put plant in hole.
