How to Get the Smile You’ve Always Dreamed Of

I didn’t always have a nice set of pearly whites. It’s been a long and sometimes painful road to get the smile that makes everyone stare in envy. It all started with an insane addiction to sodas that slowly but surely rotted my teeth and make the enamel so weak that any impact was devastating. In 2012, I hit my front tooth, and it chipped. Badly. I was too embarrassed to smile or even leave my house. I visited a recommended dentist to get checked out, and he told me that nearly all of my teeth had cavities. I cried…and cried some more. While the rest of my teeth could wait, we went ahead and fixed my visible smile – my canine to canine. Without the aid of my mom’s dental discount that covered me, I would be up to my ears in bills. Porcelain veneers cost a pretty pretty, and from that situation in my life on…I promised to take better care of my teeth, along with limiting the amount of sodas that I consume.

1. Limit foods, drinks, etc that can stain your teeth, such as sodas, red wine, and cigarettes. If you’re going to consume a drink that can stain your teeth or smoke a cigarette, be sure to brush your teeth soon after!

2. Don’t stick with the same toothbrush for too long! It is recommended that you switch out your toothbrush every two to three months due to icky bacteria. 

3. Don’t place your toothbrush in a drawer, cabinet or any other airtight container. Your toothbrush can’t air out this way, thus encouraging mold growth.

4. Floss! I know, I know. It’s annoying, and it can hurt (and bleed) if you don’t do it often. This is probably the most crucial tip to getting the freshest mouth possible! It removes plaque that flossing and mouthwashing simply can’t reach.

5. Brush 2-3 times a day. Particularly as soon as you wake up in the morning and one of the last things you do before you go to sleep at night. It is also suggested that you brush your teeth after meals. This helps prevent tooth and gum disease.
