I’m having so much fun crafting cute little DIY projects for my youngest daughter’s first birthday party. It started out as a necessity since I couldn’t afford pre-made decorations, but now that I’m in the midst of it, I’m glad I chose to make my own decorations! As mentioned in my previous DIY Elmo Birthday Party post, I’ll be sharing a tutorial for everything that I’m creating. This includes Elmo plates, Elmo cups (scroll down!), Cookie Monster cupcakes, Sesame Street party favors, Sesame Street party games and more! The great thing about these projects is that EVERYTHING can be bought from your local dollar store, and that they’re so easy…that if you have older children, they can do this one!
Let’s get this show on the road!
Step one: Apply tacky glue onto the back of the googly eyes and adhere to the plastic cups. The googly eyes at my local Dollar Tree aren’t self-adhesive, so if your googly eyes are self-adhesive, just peel off the paper back and stick onto the plastic cup.
Dollar Tree tip: Don’t buy the red cups in the party aisle. Buy the ones in the paper/plastic aisle! That way you’re getting 16 cups instead of 8!
Step two: Cut out an oval shape using the orange construction paper and glue onto the plastic cup. Make sure the nose is close to the eyes so you have room for Elmo’s mouth.
Step three (told you this one was easy): Cut a smile shape out of black construction paper and glue onto the plastic cup beneath Elmo’s nose.
Ta-da. You’re done. Easy peasy. I’m sure you could spruce it up if you had tons of time, but I didn’t have days to spend on a single project. This took me about 30 minutes to do 16 cups.
